The owners of off-grid homes are in danger of becoming the losers in the race to Net Zero.

Off-grid properties, many of which are poorly insulated, are harder to heat by the methods currently preferred by the Government.

Bio LPG is the obvious solution to the problem. It is not a fossil fuel, yet has the same calorific output as standard LPG. The Government should give serious consideration to its merits.

Rural homeowners face unique challenges in decarbonising their homes, as I know from the feedback I receive from constituents in Waveney. Only by considering the full breadth of renewable options available, and kickstarting a rural insulation drive, can we give these homes and businesses a fair choice on their way to Net Zero.

In Ceredigion around 43 percent of properties are not connected to the gas grid. The area also has the second highest fuel poverty rates in Wales. Undertaking a retrofit and installing a heat pump could cost as much as £32,000, something the majority of my constituents won’t be able to afford. The UK Government should consider a mixed-technology approach to decarbonising rural homes and businesses that won’t put unnecessary financial pressure on households.

Ben Lake, MP for Ceredigion

“At Baxi we believe in a whole system approach, advocating for a just and balanced transition which offers consumer choice. In the off-gas sector drop in bio-fuels and hybrid heat pump systems will have an important role to play to ensure affordable and pragmatic choices are available.”

“Given the depth and scale of the net zero challenge, government cannot afford to push forward with its current all or nothing approach to rural home decarbonisation. This not only places an unfair and disproportionate burden on off-grid properties, but it also risks large scale failure in convincing households to take up the switch.”
